 CANADA

" The most important maternal quality is calving ease. In crosses, the Tarentaise has never historically presented any calving problems. The next maternal quality you need is the capacity for dairy production. All these elements lead to the conclusion that this breed has really important maternal traits for Canadian farmers. "
J. Leeman - Breeder

" Above all it is the calves' appearance and the feminine traits of the females which are so striking. As the males continue to develop during the winter and spring, it is interesting to notice the impressive gains achieved in beef production and feed conversion performances. "

J. Leeman – Breeder

 USA

" Last summer was very dry. But none of the Tarentaise calves suffered from ophthalmia. With my other breeds, 50 % of the calves were affected. "
M. Olson – Dakota

" These Tarentaise cows are very fertile, which is an important factor in the success of any artificial insemination programme. "
M. Hatfield, 600 AIs every year - Oregon

 MEXICO

" We introduced the Tarentaise into our country a few years ago: the breed adapts well to difficult dry conditions and makes cattle production easy in some areas where others have succumbed, in particular, to piroplasmosis problems. "
M. Higalgo, National Genetic Improvement Manager

 GUYANA

" I was looking for a breed capable of using local resources as efficiently as possible: quite poor forage with a supplement of rice bran and minerals, as local forage is practically devoid of them. So, in 1993, I imported some Tarentaise cows which are a complete success. "
M. Mornand – Guyana

 BRESIL

" About sixty Sindi cows (a Zebu breed) were crossed with a Tarentaise bull. The results are exceptional in the Brazilian context, for milk production as well as fertility, growth and the conformation of the calves, even though the animals spend the whole day on extensive grazing of mediocre quality "
Experience de M. Carrobourg

" The Tarentaise breed arrived in Brazil in 1975. I know a herd of 20 pedigree cows in a very harsh mountainous region 100 km from Rio de Janeiro. The animals are perfectly resistant to the climate, the farming conditions and above all, the serious local parasitism. "
M. Rubio, Genetics Expert

 ALBANIAN EXPERIENCE

" The Tarentaise is a very hardy breed capable of withstanding under-nourishment. "
Korcà Livestock Research Station

" In comparison with other breeds used here in the mountains, the feed conversion of the Tarentaise is far superior. "
Livestock Research Institute of Tirana

 TUNISIA

" The main qualities of the Tarentaise which have been noted in Tunisia are in particular its good reproductive aptitude (it usually produces one calf every year) and its easy calvings, which require no assistance. "
Veterinary Surgeon Drira, Ministry of Agriculture.

" In 1992, I chose to develop a herd of Tarentaise cattle because I had seen their adaptability in farms in the North West of the country. The Tarentaise is much less difficult to feed than the more productive breeds which have become established in Tunisia.

It is an excellent cow for rough fodder conversion. My herd has come through years of drought without any problems. "
Mr. Daoud, Veterinary Surgeon and Farmer.

 BURKINA FASO

" Our farm is situated 63 km from Ouagadougou. We are enormously satisfied with their adaptation to the climate. We have great faith in the Tarentaise, for we have seen its hardiness for ourselves. "
M. Nombre

" For several years farmers have been successfully using semen from Tarentaise bulls to improve the dairy production of local breeds. In this country with its ancestral farming tradition, the direct sale of milk is already well developed. "
M. Roy – Technician

 EGYPT

The local Baladi cows were inseminated with Tarentaise bulls. No calving difficulties were observed. The first crossbred heifers were inseminated at 18 months of age instead of 2 years for the heifers of local breeds (minimum gain of 6 months in sexual maturity). "
BLAFE Programme

" No problem of acclimatising was noted in spite of the normal lack of feed resources from which the calves suffered during the summer period. The crossbred animals were not very demanding as regards their feed requirements and did not need much supple-

mentation. Whilst the Baladi cows produce on average 4 to 5 litres of milk per day, the Baladi x Tarentaise crosses produce double that quantity (9 to 10 litres per day). "
BLAFE Programme

 IVOIRY COAST

The first calving took place 3 weeks after the animals arrived. The others were spread out over the following month. They all took place without problem. The performances, in spite of the change of environment, are very good and comparable to the level of production observed in France with primipares: between 15 and 20 kg/day on average. This with a diet composed of pineapple pulp silage, spent brewer's malt, grass silage and rough chopped maize silage. As for their health, one Tarentaise survived unharmed an attack of heartwater, a parasitic disease which until then had been fatal for all European cows. "
M. Sanson – Farmer
